The benefits of keeping bees outweigh any inconveniences caused by their feces and
stings. The European honey bee, Apis mellifera, originates in Europe, the Middle East, and
Africa, but has been spread by humans, and now occurs in every continent except for Antarctica
(Mortensen, etc). Although many humans appreciate bees, and amateurs even keep one or two
hives of bees in their yards, there are many people who are frustrated with local beekeepers and
beehives because of the stings they receive and the messes the bee feces makes on their houses
and cars.

Apis mellifera is not only colonized in the gardens of amateurs, but used on a much larger
scale to pollinate crops globally. Bees pollinate 30% of global crops, and almost $15 billion of
the crops of the United States of America (Mortensen, etc). Without bees, Earth’s food system
would be very different. However, in the US and other areas, Apis mellifera is not native, and, in
some cases, is causing a decrease in the population of native bees (Hammond/Blankenship).

Local beekeeping is often a way to bring communities closer together. Beekeepers will
open up their homes to sell honey when they have excess, and neighbors who barely know each
other will come together and talk, all because local honey is being sold. And the local honey is
good for the health of the people in the community, as well as building up the community itself. Although official tests have not been conclusive, many people have found that if they eat local
honey, their allergies to pollen are less apparent. Because local honey is not filtered as much,
small amounts of pollen remain in the sticky substance, and when people ingest it, those small
amounts are like allergy shots (Nall), which are injections with a tiny quantity of the allergen in
them (Mayo Clinic Staff). Honey can also help with digestion problems, and is soothing to burns.
The propolis (a gooey substance bees produce to keep the hive clean) that beekeepers collect also
has healing properties (O’Connell). And, as many parents and children know, a spoonful of
honey will sooth a sore throat.
The environment benefits from local hives as well. Honey from beekeepers with only one
or two hives does not often come from flowers soaked in pesticides. Thus, the honey, the
flowers, and the bugs in the area are healthier. And, as with all local food, the honey was not
shipped in from a farm far away, and so greenhouse gasses and other pollutants are not emitted
by trucks hauling barrels of commercially collected honey. Local honey brings awareness to the
people affected by the beekeeping, teaching them about bees. People learn about both Apis
mellifera and the bees native to the area, and awareness is raised.

In a good situation, people get used to the bees, and even come to enjoy the quiet buzz
that can be heard when no cars are coming past. But in a bad situation, neighbors are annoyed by
the bees. In an even worse situation, beekeepers answer a knock at the door to find a disgruntled
neighbor complaining about the stings their child has gotten, or the bee poop on their car. As one
person said to the author of “Bee - neighbor issue,” “...my son has had 4 bee stings this year. ...I
deserve a better quality of life. Look, my son has bee poop on his head right now!” And in a
more recent situation, a beekeeper in Sunnyside, San Francisco read a post on a local website that said, “Took my car to the car wash... They ran the car through twice but were unable to get
the crud off.” That poster claimed that the bee poop on her house and car was a nightmare, and
soon after the situation arose, she began truly investigating, and caused the displacement of three
local hives. Angry neighbors are a bad thing, but it is also a pain when people who are perfectly
happy to have bees in the neighborhood are inconvenienced by the bee poop too, as it leaves
yellow stains on white cloths that are hung out to dry near bee hives (Rusty).
Bee stings are something that should be taken into consideration; however, Apis mellifera
do not sting without reason. If they feel that their hive or their life is in danger, they will sting.
These stings are not dangerous, unless the person stung is allergic to bee venom (Hammond/
Blankenship). And while bee poop is very difficult to remove from cars and houses, it is
harmless, and the only problem it causes is a dusty, somewhat streaked appearance. That can
become an annoyance to people who enjoy the cleanliness of their cars, but it is not a big deal.
The reasons for people pushing for bees to be removed from their neighborhoods are minor, and
the things gained by the presence of bees are more important. Local bees cause a positive
environmental impact, and the products they create help the health of individuals.

Everyone Poops

Many of you reading this will have heard of, or even read to your children, the book Everyone Poops by Tarō Gomi. And as the title suggests every living thing poops. Even bees poop. It's too bad Tarō didn't mention that in the book. Maybe then it wouldn't come as a surprise to neighbors looking for who or what to blame for the yellow rain in the neighborhood. When you have 40,000+ bees living in a hive, collectively that's a lot of poop! Bees are a lot like us. Babies poop in the bed, the adults clean it up. Adults hold it all night and never poop in the bed. In the morning they go to the bathroom shortly after flying off to work and then once or twice more during the day.

Their poop comes down like rain and gets everywhere. If you live near a hive you may have noticed little yellowish brown oblong spots on your car or house windows. If you look close, you'll realize that you've seen it everywhere without thinking about it. It's on plants, the sidewalk, your house, your dog. Ever felt a little drop of rain when there wasn't a cloud in the sky? That might have been bee poop! And it's not easy to clean up! Honey, wax, nectar, pollen all end up in a honey bee's gut and what comes out is a gooey sticky mess.

It's a nightmare!

You might have to squint, but there are literally
hundreds of bee droppings all over our car!

It takes some warm water and elbow grease to get it off your car completely. It can be a nightmare! At least that's what my neighbor believes. She put it, "Your hobby is my nightmare." Some of you may be able to sympathize with her, but most of my (few) followers will think her worries a sad example of a first world problem. And one that ignores the greater good that bees play in the environment and in food production. But she is not alone in being furious by being made to live under a constant barrage of bee poop. A quick Google search of "neighbors complain about bee poop" yields these quotes (among others):

This year the landowner at the rear of my house installed approximately fifteen hives. Consequently, for three months now my house and cars have been smothered in bee poop. The beekeeper has said he will move the hives further along the field and this may alleviate the problem. I wonder if this is true. The nuisance is prolific; all my windows need cleaning daily as well as the cars.

But that's not all! There's this thread from Nextdoor.com right here in Sunnyside, SF!

On September 8th, Sap falling on cars and houses:

The original post: I was wondering if anyone knows where all the sap (or infected tree with bugs) is coming from. We thought it was from the palm tree on our street, but it seems to be in many other areas. This is the first year it has been this bad. It's on the side of the houses where the wind blows and all over the cars. It's very hard to clean off. Not sure if it is sap or what.
- When I saw this, I was pretty sure she was describing bee poop. I stayed quiet, hoping her concern would go unaddressed. I wasn't that lucky. Took about 2 weeks before she came knocking on my door.
<span style="color: #1e1c1c; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">

If it is small yellowish drops, that is bee poop. Super hard to clean. Someone could make a fortune inventing bee poop solvent.

If anyone knows a home mixture to safely remove the drops from car paint, I would sure love to know it. I ran my car through the car wash on bayshore 4 times. There was still poop that survived the trips.

Original poster: Thanks for all the responses. I am all for bees living in nature, but I am not sure if we need so many bee keepers in our neighborhood. It has really decreased our outdoor enjoyment. It is on our chairs, house paint, windows, cars, everything. What a drag.

Took my car to the car wash because they recycle water instead of having water run into the gutter. They ran the car through twice but were unable to get the crud off.
We noticed this happened last year but it has particularly heavy this year. It's a never ending struggle to keep the spots off my car and it is quite annoying. If you leave the gunk on the car for any length of time and then scrape them off they"ll eat through the car finish and fade the paint.
Anyone have a brainstorm as to how to deal with this please post them here so we can quit wearing our fingernails down to nubs. Thanks!
<span class="hide notranslate feed-comment-body" style="color: #1e1c1c; display: inline; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">

The original poster is the neighbor living a "nightmare" due to my "hobby". Not only that, turns out she lives right behind us on the other side of the Sunnyside Conservatory. But you can see, she's not alone in her frustration. If you know me, you know I try to be a good neighbor, and it pains me that I may be contributing to someone's discomfort. But is it really so bad to have bee poop on your car? If I really am causing a nuisance in the neighborhood, I need to know and I'll do what I can to mitigate the problem.

This neighbor has gone door to door to survey the neighborhood to... I'm not quite sure what her intention is. She says it's to survey the neighborhood to see what can be done to solve this problem because "we just can't live like this". To me it feels a little like she's gathering torches and pitch forks to run me out of town. So what do I do?

Check out this enormous bee poop! That's on the

I'm not the only neighbor with bees. And not even the neighbor with bees closest to her! Right across the street from her a neighbor has (had) three hives. He very graciously agreed, at her urging, to remove two of his hives! I succumbed to pressure, and just this past weekend moved my hive that used to reside in my friend's garden who also lives behind us. Her hive was about the same distance from the distraught neighbor's house as the two hives I have in The Garden. I drew the line there, however, and said I was not moving my two hives that I, and many neighbors other than her, have grown to love and enjoy. In our negotiations, she reluctantly agreed to not pursue any further action - she has already talked to the agricultural commission, went to a meeting of the SF beekeeper's association (she got no love there, as you might imagine), and went around taking pictures of windows and cars and google mapped hives in the neighborhood. We will revisit the issue in the spring when the bee population is once again on the rise and we can see what the result of three less hives in the neighborhood is. A neighbor on the block just a bit further from her than my hives also has a hive. A woman a couple blocks away has many hives, Glen Park School has a hive (at least they used to), and many other neighbors in the surrounding neighborhood do as well. So I am very skeptical that removing a few hives is going to make a difference in the amount of bee poop on her car. When she is not satisfied I fear she won't quit till she has purged every hive from the neighborhood. That can't be the solution.

Do bees belong in the urban environment?
I love my bees. I sometimes will just watch them for minutes (hours would sound better, but I'd be lying) go in and out of their hives. Bees are so important to our human survival and the entire planet. They are an integral part of the ecosystem and without them, the system would collapse. If you're still reading this, then you've undoubtedly heard that we can thank honey bees for every third bite of food and you know about colony collapse disorder. Next time a bee poops on you, you might say, "thank you."

But urban bees aren't essential to our survival. My bees aren't pollinating almonds or apple orchards. They are not part of the natural food web of the world. In fact they may be outcompeting native bees of California. 😟 Urban bees do, however, serve a purpose beyond being someone's hobby. First and foremost, they provide honey for consumption. Who can't get behind a locally produced food that is fun and arguably a healthy alternative to more traditional sweeteners? For those suffering allergies it may help build up immunities to pollen allergies. Honey and it's accompanying wax can be made into many great products including candles, soap and lotions. Most importantly, urban bees raise awareness to the plight of bees around the world thus highlighting the fragility of our planet. Can anything than the fate of our planet be more important!

What do you think? Should urban beekeeping be regulated? Maybe all hives should be registered and a limit imposed on the number of hives in a given area. Is there a solution I haven't thought of? I'm hopeful that my neighbor will grow to accept some dirty windows as an acceptable inconvenience of urban living. There are so many great things about living in San Francisco. Is it really a nightmare to live under a yellow rain, where some neighbors, when a bee drops a little love on them, look up and give thanks for what we have.
It was a bad year for my bees. All five hives, three in San Francisco and two in Nevada County didn't make it through the winter. And it was a bit of a rough start this spring, as well. Starting up 4 hives was a lot and in April I was running around between my three locations in Sunnyside and teaching full time. I was worried something was going to have to give. Somehow I and the bees made it! Although one of the hives had queen problems. I noticed supercedure cells (emergency queen cells) when inspecting the hive the second week after settling them in. I waited a few days before checking on them again and by then it was quite clear that the queen wasn't laying well, if at all. So I ordered a new queen (you can order a single bee by overnight mail!) and after a week of worry, the hive accepted the new queen. Now they're thriving like my other three, though they're about a month behind in terms of honey production.

Next week I plan on my first harvest of the summer. It won't be much, I'll be happy if I can get 10 lbs out of them. But its just a start. If all goes well, I'll be harvesting every two weeks for a couple of months and will be able to satisfy most of the appetites of friends and neighbors for local honey! Crossing my fingers, I'm letting people know now that I will have honey for sale on Wednesday, June 29th, at my usual time of 4:30 - 6:00 in The Garden.

not our-Queen. We are moved, but the clump stays together.
There are barriers all around us, like a hive, but trapping. There
are no ways to stretch our wings or fly. We are angry at the not-
our-Queen, for she is unfamiliar and will not help us. We try to
get to her, to sting her and rip at her wings and head. We cannot
reach her through the small-barrier-hive that is around her. We
stay in our barrier-hive, trapped, for a long time. There is nectar
for us, but it is not nectar. It is nearly tasteless.

moved. We are put into more barriers and the opening is
uncovered. There are more barriers above us, with the not-our-

And if you've ever wondered how a new hive settles into their new home, Lena also wrote this up as part of her assignment:

When a beekeeper gets a new hive, the bees come in a box with a frame of wood and sides made out of screens. Three pounds of bees are in this box, which amounts to around ten thousand insects. The queen is in a very small box with screens forming the walls, and for the first four days or so the hive has an instinct to kill her, as they see her as an intruder and a threat to the hive. A can of sugar water is inside the bee box, acting as a stopper, and from this the bees get their nutrition.

When the beekeeper is ready to put the bees into their new home, they take out the can and place some sort of cardboard or scrap of wood on top of the opening to keep the bees from all getting out at once. The box containing the queen is taken out and strapped in between two frames inside a hive box with rubber bands. Frames are made of wood, and sometimes contain a plastic center that has the shape of honeycomb. The bees use them to line with beeswax and then fill with honey.

There are two ways to get the rest of the bees into the new hive: The beekeeper can shake the bee box over the hive box that contains the queen until most of the bees have fallen into the hive, or the bee box can be placed inside a second hive box, this one empty of frames. The box with the queen in it is stacked on top of that box. The next day, the beekeeper takes out the lower box, as most of the bees have climbed into the upper box.

After another couple of days, the bees have gotten used to the queen’s smell, and accept her as their queen. The beekeeper replaces the cork in the queen’s box with marshmallow, and the bees are able to chew through it and get their queen out.

The Second Garden will be back at our regular scheduled time and place, this next Wednesday, September 2nd, 4:30 - 6pm for the second of three fundraisers. This one is for Or Shalom Jewish Community and comes just in time for Rosh Hashanah. Please come to The Garden for your honey (or lotion, got lots!), and support a very special community. It's where Carter and Lena were called to the Torah! It's a place as sweet as honey!

Denman, Miraloma, SF Community, K9 Comrades, SOTA, Sunnyside, Glen Park, Lowell, and Glenridge Coop each got a piece of the $387 raised!
At the end of the day, all I had left were two packages of honeycomb and a few of the gift sizes of honey. Local honey that tastes good - and does good!

Last year I held three fundraisers in The Garden (you can check out my post from last year). This year I'm doing it again with one small change.

Last summer we raised $333 for 3 different organizations: Denman Middle School PTSA, the National MS Society, and Or Shalom Jewish Community. This time the school fundraiser will be for whatever school you want to donate to!

If you enjoyed The Garden Bazaar (if you were there, I know you did!), please come out and support The Second Garden in our fundraising efforts:

August 15, Noon - 4 pm, Back to School Fundraiser
When you come on August 15 and purchase honey, just tell me which school you want the donation made to and 50% of that sale will go to your school. Denman and SOTA get favored school status. 100% of the sale will go to these schools if you select one as your school!
The Garden Bazaar was such a hit, there may be just a little of that flavor on this day.

September 2, 4:30 - 6 pm, Or Shalom Jewish Community
Get your honey for the new year and support a wonderful synagogue - www.orshalom.org.

September 13, 11 am - 3 pm, National MS Society
Another Second Sunday Brunch event. Instead of a potluck, guests are asked to bring a donation. Further support The National MS Society by buying some honey and 100% goes to sponsor our team, people in purple for the National MS Society's Waves to Wine ride. Waves to Wine is a two day fundraising bike ride. Our whole family will be riding 90 miles to help bring an end to this terrible disease.
Get up close and personal with my bee hives!

This Saturday, July 25th, I am inviting 3 lucky people to join me in a routine hive inspection. We'll check on the health of the hives (one I already know isn't doing well :( - but I've ordered a new queen) and remove one or more frames of honey for later extraction. Afterwards we'll share some mead and honey that we just worked to remove from the hive! This is not a class. Just a chance to hang out with the bees, and see what a typical inspection is like. A donation of $25 will be greatly appreciated!

I have 3 veils, but no other protective gear. Inspite of what you may have seen on TV or YouTube, a body suit is really not necessary. Some bee keepers do their bee keeping in shorts and a t-shirt! I think that's asking for trouble, so I always wear my veil, gloves and long shirt and pants. When I have gotten stung through my clothes, it's not really a proper sting. Her stinger gets stuck in my clothes and not my skin. Still hurts, but not as much, doesn't swell nearly as much, or last as long as a sting directly on the skin.

Every second Sunday of the month we used to have an open house pot-luck brunch in The Garden so that we could relax with our friends and family. Sometimes we'd have just a few guests, and other times our garden was overflowing. Much of our community were regulars, school friends, work friends, old friends, new friends, and, of course, family. When people from our different communities intersected, something magical happened. The food was always delicious and plentiful. Smiles and laughter lit up The Garden. For a few hours, once a month, we had no worries, only joy. Even the weather was touched by the magic; more often than not, the brunch days were sunny and pleasant!

Our family misses the Second Sunday Brunches we used to have in The Garden. The amazing food, good conversation and the chance to stay connected with our community was always a bright spot in our month But, alas, as the kids got bigger, it became harder to sustain the once a month commitment. We’ve revisited it a few times, but nothing has ever gotten off the ground.

In some ways, my Wednesday Honey Sales remind me of the Second Sunday Brunches. Like the brunches, I'm never sure who will show up, I've reconnected with many friends, and we often share food (besides the honey) and drink. And of course we are out in The Garden, tapping into the magic of this special place. Next Sunday, July 12th, my honey sale will be even more like a Second Sunday Brunch. Instead of just food and drink the "pot-luck" will include jewelry, marinades, art, live music (talented kids), and more. All of it will be available to buy or trade. But like the Sunday Brunches, the smiles, laughter, good company will be plentiful and free! The Garden Bazaar will take place from noon to 4 in The Garden on July 12th, a second Sunday. I didn't plan it that way. Is it a coincidence? I think not! The magic will be there, too!
Today we read about MLK and wrote "I have a
dream" wishes. Lena said, "I have a dream that
everybody in the world would come to our brunch!" I
thought that was sweet, and metaphoricaly speaking, it
is true to the spirit of the second sunday brunch.
We're big fans.

In some ways, Lena's wish came true every second Sunday. One, or more, of the most important people in our world came to The Garden, and over the course of the years of the Second Sunday Brunch, they all did. Now I'm hoping to revive it and, once again, share the magic with family, friends, and neighbors. I hope you'll be there.
Why the Second Garden?

A few people have asked me how, or why, I came up with The Second Garden. I gladly give the long or short version depending on how much time we have, or how busy The Garden is at the time. So here is the full version:
Growing up, our family, like many families I'm guessing, gave names to the important places in our lives - the centers of family life. And these names were almost always descriptive. We had Grandpa and Grandma's House, Cousin Geoffrey's House, our San Francisco home was 258. and when our family bought property in the Sierra Foothills of Nevada County it became The Land. And even on The Land, the different buildings we built took on names: we had The Library, The Cabin, The Shed, The House, The Barn. I suppose the outhouse, was just "the outhouse" not "The Outhouse". *Wait!* I take that back. Maybe it does merit capitalization. It was a center of activity. Ever seen a four seater bathroom? I kid you not!
This trend of naming the places in our lives continued into young adulthood. Later we had Fair Oaks (sometimes called The Pink Palace), Shrader St, and - The Garden.
258 took on this additional name when my cousins moved in. And it's stuck. It feels more inclusive than 258. The Garden is home to four households and we all care for it and enjoy it.

Nice story. So why not just call it The Garden?

When it came time to name our wireless network, I called it, "The Garden". My first wireless network and it wasn't long before I had some major technical difficulties. I had to rename it. So that it would be easy for the household to recognize the new network, I renamed it, you guessed it, "The Second Garden". Then when it came time to share my beer (remember, the beer came before the honey).

I labeled it "Beer From The Second Garden". I felt I couldn't rightly call it "The Garden". How presumptuous would that be! But every time I tell this story, I feel a little bit more like I've got it backward. Out of all the gardens in the world, ours is the one that's second to Eden? Not likely.

Well, with the birds chirping and the bees buzzing, laying on the grass, eyes closed, listening to the sound of the wind blowing through the palm fronds, it feels like it sometimes. So I'm sticking with it. And now "The Second Garden" begs a story and I like telling it. Besides, Second Garden Honey has a nice ring to it!

And two are in my dad and Pat's garden outside North San Juan, CA.

It's pretty exciting taking care of so many bees, but I'm finding it difficult to be separated from them, even by just a block. I see the bees in my garden every day and can see with a glance that everything is OK. I especially find myself worrying about my Gold Country bees. They are in a very different climate and in a nectar desert when compared to the rich urban variety of gardens. Instead of every day, I can only check on them about once a month! I leave for Dad and Pat's in a few hours. It will be my second visit since installing them.

Right now only one hive is giving honey - my first hive that I captured from my neighbors garbage can - "Dave's Bees". When they're all producing I may be swimming in honey! But right now, my honey bucket is running low. Depending on how many people show up this Wednesday to buy honey, I may have to close up early and turn people away. I have about 8 lbs now. Last week I sold 20.

I feel like I have truly arrived as a beekeeper and a brewer. Merging both crafts, my honey can now be found at San Francisco Brewcraft sanfranciscobrewcraft.com). I'm thinking of dubbing myself, The Brewkeeper. It's a nice portmanteau (my new favorite word) that fits me rather well, don't you think?

I was excited when shopping recently at San Francisco Brewcraft. I got into a conversation with another shopper and one of the owners about bees and honey when the owner said they'd like to sell my honey. I was thrilled, but I tried to play it cool and casually said I'd bring some in next time I came shopping. So a couple of weeks ago, I brought in 9 lbs of honey in three bottles. When it came to negotiating a price, I confessed that really it was an honor to have my honey in this Mecca for SF home brewers, and I'd take anything they would offer me. If you've bought honey from me, then you know that I would normally sell 3 lbs for $36. They sell 3 lbs for $22. You can imagine what they bought the honey from me for. It's not always about the money.

I recently ran out of honey at home and had to turn away some good folk who came too late to my last honey sale of the year. If you really want some of my honey, rush down to San Francisco Brewcraft and there may still be a three pound bottle for sale. For your trouble, you'll get my honey cheap! Maybe you'll go home with a home brewing kit with the money you save, and get hooked on brewing, like I did. Brewing, like fine cuisine cooking, melds art and science. Throw in a nice buzz from the alcohol, and what's not to love! I just finished a test bottle of this year's pumpkin ale before I added the spices. A nice pumpkin flavor, maybe just a little astringent on the back of my tongue. I think when it's fully conditioned, it will be quite nice.

Look! There's my honey, right next to other honey in the only homebrew supply store in San Francisco. I'm trying not to rush back to SF Brewcraft to check on whether or not they'd sold any yet. based on the crystallization of their honey stock, looks like they don't move their honey quickly. I'll try not to be disappointed if all three bottles are still there when I shop there next time.

If you happen to find yourself shopping at SF Brewcraft, check the honey supply and let me know.

Stay sweet!
No, I didn't misspell that, or come up with some clever portmanteau on my own. Some one else did that. Wherever the word came from, in our kitchen, we Garden residents are undoubtedly under a zombee attack and have been since late last summer!

I've been meaning to write about this for a long time, but like much of this blog it takes me a long time to get to it. Tonight I hope to watch the latest episode of one my favorite TV shows, The Walking Dead. I'm using my excitement of the show to inspire me to finally put some words down on the screen.

Night of the Flying Dead!

So last summer, every night one or more bees would somehow end up in our kitchen, buzz around aimlessly for a bit until they collapsed on some surface, or we managed to get them back outside. After awhile, we realized if we left our kitchen light on and were patient, the wayward bees would eventually find their way to the light bowl where they would die within minutes. I had heard or read something about this so I bagged one of the bees and sure enough, a few days later the dead bee was not alone in the sealed Ziplock bag. There were 6 or 7 tiny pupae in the bag with it. My bees were turning into zombees!

Disoriented she flies around apparently aimlessly other than being attracted to light. You can see how this odd behavior led someone to coin the term, zombee. Without the warmth of the hive and suffering from the parasites growing inside her, she is truly a member of the walking, or flying dead, if you will. The phorid maggots continue their meal of bee innards until they crawl out of the carcass and pupate. A few weeks later they emerge as adults, mate, and then the females seek out their next victim. The cycle continues!

The bees fly around like zombies, but they don't actually seek out the flesh of their fellow bees. Rather, the bees are the raw flesh for the zombie fly. In fact, leaving their hive rather than an act of aggression, could be a form of self sacrifice - leaving the hive when they recognize they are sick in order to not infect the rest of the hive. Scientists, including John Hafernik who was the chair of the SFSU Biology department while I was a student there, are working on answering questions like these about Apocephalus borealis and the honey bee.

ZomBee Watch

Also for about a year I've been meaning to sign up and participate in this citizen science project, ZomBee Watch. ZomBee watch relies on regular folk like you and me, to record and report on what is happening with the bees in their neighborhood, whether they are infected by Apocephalus borealis, or not. Have you noticed bees at night in your neighborhood? You can help, too. Start by going to zombeewathch.org and see if its something you're interested in. Here's a pretty cool video about Dr. Hafernick and his work with Apocephalus borealis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdZ3M8C6yhs

Here's a funny story about John Hafernik: Back when I was getting my MA in biology I had a party for the biology department. When Dr. Hafernik arrived, he realized he had been to our house before - for a party in the 70's! He was friends of my parents friends. I was afraid to ask for details. I'll let what went on at the party remain a mystery.

Is this why bees are disappearing around the world?!

When I first realized my bees were infected with Apocephalus borealis I was worried for the health of my hives. It was around that time that the Easter Hive (that was my second swarm I captured) perished. I wondered if this was a major factor in colony collapse disorder. I soon learned, however, that Apocephalus borealis is not a serious threat to a hive. The bees that are infected are the foraging bees who have already lived much of their life anyway. But when you add it to the long list that honey bees have to deal with: verora mites, chalk brood, foul brood, drought, mono crops, pesticides, herbicides (neonictinoids being the worst - check this website for common garden products to avoid: http://www.centerforfoodsafety.org/files/pesticide_list_final_59620.pdf), predators - the list goes on! Add Apocephalus borealis to this list and it just may be too much for some hives. Scientists are coming to the understanding that there is no single culprit for CCD and thus no silver bullet to prevent it. But it also means there are lots of little things we can do to help our bee friends: plant pollinator friendly plants, don't use insecticides, if you live in an area of dry summers keep a bowl of water and marbles out near your flowers, and become a citizen scientist to help further our understanding of Apocephalus borealis.
You can also support your local beekeeper! Your local beekeeper is working hard to take good care of their bees and their bees are taking care of you. And speaking of your local beekeeper, I'm still selling honey every Wednesday between 4:30 and 6:00. But probably for only another few weeks, as I'll be running out of honey for the year soon. I hope I see you here soon!

I'm here, in my garden with the gate open, every Wednesday from 4:30 to 6:00 selling honey and more! My daughter, Lena, and I have made candles, lotion and lip-balm from the beeswax I've collected. I'll be here each Wednesday as long as I have honey to sell. Currently I have about 30 lbs and about 60 lbs waiting to be harvested in my two hives. You don't need to buy any honey, just come by to check out the hives! If Wednesday afternoon is not a good time for you, I'm sure we can find a time that works for both of us.

I've decided to do three fundraisers as part of my honey selling. On these fundraising days all sales will be donated to three different organizations that mean a lot to me and my family.

James Denman PTSA, August 20 - This is Lena's middle school and where many of the kids in the neighborhood will attend middle school as well. Sunnyside and Miraloma are feeder schools of Denman. More and more graduates of those schools are enrolling at Denman every year. It's a great school with a warm and caring staff and community. The PTSA is growing fast and works hard to support the school.

National MS Society - Waves to Wine ride, September 3 - For the first time our whole family will participate in this two day, 90 mile ride to raise money for the National MS Society as part of the team, people in purple. My mother struggled with multiple sclerosis for many years. When she passed, we formed our team in honor of her, the lady in purple, from the play for colored girls who have considered suicide when the rainbow is enuf which she produced, directed and starred in when she was forced to retire because of MS.

Or Shalom Jewish Community, September 17 - Just in time for Rosh Hashana.

I'm right next to the Sunnyside Conservatory on Monterey Blvd. Bring a jar for $1 off your honey. I ship, too! $15 gets you 11.25 ounces in one of those cute honey bear containers. Hope to see you some day soon.

I decided to expand the blog. Hopefully the pages to the right will give you something to read when the time between posts grows long.
Without further ado... Introducing "Honey Jar"!BrewKeeperhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09334076312282410764noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1555488596496864765.post-28952496861451764042014-07-11T16:46:00.002-07:002014-07-11T16:46:32.295-07:00More Honey!

Frames formerly full of 25 lbs of honey. After extracting,
I leave them in front of the hive for the bees to get back a little of what I've stollen from them.
Plus the sticky mess is all gone!

I've now harvested and extracted honey three times. And I'm planning on harvesting more in about a week when the kids return from Costa Rica. I didn't expect to be getting this much honey out of my two hives. So far its been about 30 lbs the first extraction, 40 the second, and 25 the third. That's a total of almost 100 lbs of honey!

In order to make that much honey, my bees

visited about two hundred million flowers!

and flew a collective 5 million miles!

wow.

Unfortunately, the honey frames attract wasps as well.
I'm constantly having to shoo them away when I'm pouring honey outside.
Once, one drowned itself by falling into the jar. One less wasp to worry about.

After all the giving away and selling I still about 22lbs left (see the upper right of the blog for how much honey I currently have). Let me know if you want any.

I've thoroughly enjoyed giving away and selling the honey I've harvested. It's allowed me to share one of the things I'm really enjoying doing in The Garden. In a way, I've made The Garden my classroom, and all my visitors are my students. It reminds me that I enjoy teaching, especially when there is no expectations or students to worry about after I've gone to bed!

And I've seen old friends whom I hadn't seen for years, I've met many wonderful neighbors, some of whom I've arranged trades for their own craft hobby. I've already gotten a bottle of mead and some jam from Curt (thank you) and will hopefully get some bacon from Eric and Lopa in exchange for their next order of honey. Home smoked bacon, can't wait! I've gotten lemons from three different neighbors that we used to make honey lemonade for Lena's bat mitzvah party. Delicious, I was told. Bummer for me, it was all gone by the time I was ready to try any. Plus, I've been able to recoup some of the costs of this very expensive hobby.

If you ever want honey, or just want to stop by to check out the hives, please, do let me know!

Stay Sweet!
